Never stop recognizing your gifts for what they are.
On December 11, several members of the team tuned in to the celebration of life for Ailey Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison.
Held in person at New York City Center and streamed live online by Nel Shelby Productions, the event was a powerful testament to her profound and enduring impact on the dance world, arts and culture at large, and all those who encountered her or witnessed her dancing.
I mean, can you even imagine leading a life that is so remarkable, Morgan Freeman narrates your life story as you receive a Kennedy Honors?
Or Jon Batiste plays a second line as the buoyant conclusion to your memorial service?
Incredible.
Anna Deavere Smith (actor and playwright) quoted Ms. Jamison in her remarks. She said that when confronted with constant praise of her talents, Jamison often brushed them aside, but one time, she got serious and told Smith:
“I believe it’s a gift. And I believe if I forget it’s a gift, it might go away.”
I’m bringing this spirit with me into 2025, and I hope you will as well.
Never stop recognizing your gifts for what they are.
Happy New Year!!
